It's like they don't want them to get together but they're teasing the audience. If you watch that scene again, when Steve says it's his "partner." The older man looks as if he wants to say, "you don't look gay" or something like that.
But CBS would NEVER have them get together, even though my mom who's 78 years old would love to see that!
