Some thoughts about the Steve/Danny Relationshipt (Hawaii Five-0)

Heya...

I thought a lot about "my new obsession" over the last days, especially about Steve/Danny and the "relationship" they are having and where the writers could have head to... and since I'm always "up for discussion", I thought, I could maybe share "my" opinion about this... especially because I REALLY don't know what to think about anymore... *lol* I thought I knew, but I'm not so sure anymore...

I have to admit: When I saw the first episode, I wasn't very thrilled at all... of course I noticed the "tension" between Steve an Danny, but becaues the show itself didn't hook me "immediately", I didn't think all too much about it... then there was the 2nd episode which I TOTALLY loved and adored and all of sudden I fell for the show...

and of course for Steve/Danny and whatever it is they are having...

But well, since I love this show, I'm now REALLY thinking about, which direction the writers will choose...

I'd like to compare it for example to "Bones" and the relationship between Booth and Bones... there always was some "tension" right from the start, and even if they are STILL not together or close to being together, it's more then obvious, that at SOME point they will be... maybe it will mean the end of the show, I don't know, but since they are really dragging it out for SOOOOO long, I think it will be the Season finale sooner or later... the wedding or something like that... them finally getting together...

but it's not as if there "never happened" anything between them... the writers are always throwing some bones... for example in Season 3 when they kissed underneath the mistle toe... or last season, with Booth REALLY wanting to "go for it"...

Now I'm asking myself, what the writers of "Hawaii Five-0" want... I mean, it's obvious that they want to show Steve and Danny as straight cool guys... I mean, why else would they bring "Catherine" into the game at all if not to prove that Steve is "oh so straight"...

but on the other hand they are "throwing bones" either, like in the last episode with the "Who are you talking to, your wife?" - "My partner" conversation... or the "You miss me, don't you?" thing...

It's as if the writers know EXACTLY what they are doing and that they really do this on purpose...

But I don't think they are REALLY heading into the direction of getting Steve and Danny together at some point, or do they?

I mean, I'm absolutely aware of the fact that the "main thing" of the show will be the "solving crimes" suspect, like it's always in "such shows"... It's in BONES too... or in for example 21 JUMP STREET and so on... but at some point, there IS some romance involved... mostly... even in "The Mentalist" we already HAD this kind of thing (and I haven't given up hope yet, that there will happen something again between 2 of the characters :P), so I'm asking myself, if at some point Steve and Danny will both hook up with girls or if they will stay single and have this "awkward kind of relationship"...

I mean, for ME it's always "more interesting" seeing something that "is not there" or better to say "something that they don't show"... I'm a slash whore like whoa, and the people who know me know this either, and I always had a thing for "pairings that don't really exist"... like in Prison Break Michael and Sucre or Lincoln and Alex and there is a loooooooooooong list of this... "my" pairings usually DON'T get together at all *lol*

Personally I don't think we will ever actually see Steve and Danny kissing, but on the other hand... if the writers REALLY wanna show how "straight" they are, why all this "hints" that they are not? Why all this comments about them "having something together"?

I'm a bit confused to be honest *lol*

and the other thing is: I don't know much about Alex or Scott... I mean, nothing "personal", like if they even would act something like that... I mean, I don't think they are homophobic at all, don't misunderstand me, but there ARE actors who prefer NOT to play a gay role or kiss people of the same sex, even for a movie or a tv-show... I don't know if Alex or Scott would actually "do it"... but I would love them if so *lol* =D

So well... what do YOU think? Do you think there WILL happen something at some point? Or are the writers just "playing" with the watcher's fantasies?

I mean, honestly... if they would actually be "brave" enough to go for something like that, that would be a first, would it? At least *I* have never seen something like that in a crime show... a lot of man/female main characters hooking up but never some male/male main characters hooking up =p I would love to see something like that for once =D

Well... I have to admit: I don't know much about all this... since I'm from Austria - so the other side of the country - I have not much of a clue about the networks in the USA ^^" If not for Livejournal and other websites, I wouldn't even be able to watch "Hawaii Five-0" at all...

But maybe I will have to "search for" such things at all...

Thanks for the information...

I really really hope, they won't cancel Hawaii Five-0 all too soon... it's too good to get cancelled...

Since I'm from Austria - so the other side of the country

If by country, you meant world as Austria is on another continent completely.

And yeah, CBS and angry stay-at-home-moms have a habit of complaining about things to get shows canceled because they apparently have nothing better to do with their time. It's been renewed for a second season already, but we'll see how long that lasts.

However, the writers will most likely stay on the topic of long, slashy looks between Steve and Danny and keep in the running gag of them being 'married'. There won't be any actual slash on the show, ever. I imagine one of them will soon start being in a committed relationship with a woman so the whole UST with their partner will slowly die down.

It's fucking sad really. Stupid homophobic Americans. Btw, I'm Canadian.

Sorry, I meant other side of the continent... I'M sorry... *lol* I was kinda "in thoughts" when I typed this... I MEANT continent... other side of the world actually...

And thanks for all the information of CBS...

I now know again in what a "great country" i live... I mean, you should see the scenes they are showing at 7 in the evening... gay scenes that is... especially in soaps you see A LOT "naked skin" if you wanna call it like this... you don't even need to slash, because there are lots of gay couples in German TV... one of them even married recently after 2 years relationship... but well...

Long story short... I was also "afraid" that there WILL be some serious relationship eventually between Steve of Danny and some woman, but I would rather have them stay "single" and have "their moments" than "destroying" what great chemistry they have with doing something like that -.-

*sighs*

If they did make them a couple and ratings were good (and they didn't lose sponsors),they'd keep the show on no matter how many complaints they got.
Two prime time shows feature gay characters-Brothers and Sisters and Modern Family. I think Grey's Anatomy now has a gay couple as well.
Having said that,I doubt the writers will "go there." I think the audience they're going for is straight guys, although judging from the slashiness they've caught on that at least some women and gay men are watching. I think they'll keep them straight and play up the "bromance"between them as well as the obvious chemistry between the actors.
I think we'll see them with women from time to time, hopefully not in serious relationships. I prefer the sexual ambiguity and slashy subtext to having to sit through them with many different women, and a relationship with a woman on a show like this(where the plot is about the crime and the relationships are woven in)would just take too much time away from the guys and their friendship/bromance,imo.I agree with you,if we have to see them with women, let it be some casual things that don't take away from the two of them.

Well... Grey's Anatomy has Callie and Arizona... a lesbian couple and the only reason for me to still watch the show... their relationship developed now over nearly 2 seasons and I still love them to NO end... Jessica and Sara are doing a REALLY great job in this, but to be honest: I don't think they would ever bring a gay couple in there... which means 2 male characters hooking up... the "lesbian way" was the waaaaaaay more easy way for the writers of "Grey's Anatomy" I think... And To be honest: I couldn't have been pictured ANY of the existing characters to become gay... okay, it was a surprise with Callie either, but it was very well written, how it all started out with friendship and confusing feelings and so on ;-)

But back to Hawaii Five-0... I really really love what Steve and Danny have and like I wrote: I don't care if they hook up with women from time to time, as long as there is no "getting married" and "having kids" involved... that mostly destroys a lot...

I had this "back then" when I was watching 21 Jump Street... Tom and Doug had soooooo much chemistry and there was some "bromance" definitely too... and such slashy comments, even if the show aired over 20 years ago (around 1987 I think)... thing is: When Tom and Doug both got into "serious relationships" this all kinda stopped and i hated it... and I don't understand why there MOSTLY have to be something like that "involved" at all and why the lead characters always have to get into a serious relationship after a while?

But as long as it's not happening in H 5-0, I shouldn't complain at all :D

I hate to say it, but I'm afraid [livejournal.com profile] emocezi is dead right. Considering the amount of anti-gay sentiment in the US at the moment, the idea that a non-cable network (ABC, CBS and NBC are the non-cable networks in the US, with cable networks like HBO and Showtime airing original shows with more adult and controversial content) would actually go there with a mainstream cop drama is pretty unlikely. The show's producers apparently once worked in a creative capacity on Xena, so they're well aware of subtext and are obviously not averse to the tease, but I don't know that it's ever going to amount to anything. However, they're giving us so much to work with that I don't really care - I'm perfectly willing to fill in the blanks with fic. :)

[identity profile] bm-shipper.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're totally right *lol*
Things not acutally "being there" had never been an "issue" for me... and neither an obstacle *lol*

I've always "slashed" people I KNEW would NEVER actually BE a couple, but well... there is SO much more subtext, than I've seen in a loooooooooooong time... so I thought maybe... just maybe, the writers go in another direction...

Yeah, I'm THAT naive =D

[identity profile] lamardeuse.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're being naïve at all - there have been several moments already on this show where I start wondering if they're actually going to go there. I mean, anything's possible, but let's just say I'm trying not to get my hopes up for anything on-screen, like with Deniz and Roman! :)

[identity profile] bm-shipper.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah... I don't think there is ANY pairing in the world that can be compared to Deniz and Roman... but the 2 actors Dennis and Igor said a couple of time how comfortable they are with each other and they don't even have a problem with tongue-kissing... so well *lol* I don't think something like that would EVER happen between Danny and Steve, even if it would be hot...

But well... I for example would love something like they have to play a gay couple for a case... I know that's lame, but well... it doesn'T even have to be "romantically", but even SEEING something like that, even if it doesn't mean something, would totally be great, but I don't think we will ever see something like that...w e'll see :)

[identity profile] michele659.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you-let's at least have the pretend slash! Shows will do that from time to time, having the heterosexual pair be awkward (or maybe enjoying it a little too much, lol).
I tend to love a lot of pairings I know I'll never see. I loved Michael and Alex in PB and thought they were so much better suited than Michael and Sara,House and Chase,Ianto and Owen(I loved Ianto and Jack, but I could see Ianto with Owen, and Ten for that matter,as well)and now,Steve and Danny.
Who are Deniz and Roman, and am I missing something by not seeing them?

[identity profile] bm-shipper.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I can agree with you mostly, even if I like other pairings than you do, but I DO slash a lot... and well... I also loved Prison Break very much and I didn't like Sara at all... but I have to admit: In the end I wanted to slash her with Gretchen... that would have been waaaaaaaay hot, becaues I loved Gretchen and I think Jody Lynn O'Keefe is sooooooo pretty... but for Prison Break my OTPs were Michael and Sucre (oh yeah, I'm lame... but they would have died for each other, and I always was impressed at how much they trusted each other)... and also Alex and Lincoln, especially in Season 4... OMG, when they bonded, it was like "OMG I have a new OTP" *lol* I know, I'm some REALLY crazy person and I have the craziest OTP's at all...
For Torchwood... yeah... silly me wanted John Hart (James Marsters) to hook up with Owen... *lol* I know they didn't even really talk to each other, but They would have been sooooooooooooo hot... really... if you think about it... that would have been similiar to Danny and Steve, I'M pretty sure... they would even have fought about who's top and who bottom :D

and about Deniz and Roman *points to sidebar animation 7-14* they are a gay couple from a german daily Soap called "Alles was zählt" - "Everything that counts" and they have the BEST CHEMISTRY EVER! Like SERIOUSLY... You should watch this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV9PMAXWEms

That was their reunion back then in September... they broke up because Roman cheated on Deniz with his ex-boyfriend Marc, but they got back together ;-) The storyline with Marc was great too though...

and if you're intersted in their WHOLE storyline (they've been together on-off for about 3 years now) you should check out eskimokissproject on youtube... the subtitled their WHOLE Storyline =D
