Wonderful Christmas Time
“Dougie? What’s this?“ the five year old boy asked when Doug Penhall was up on a chair to add the green plant in the living room above the doorway. He fixed it, turned to Clavo and raised him into his arms.
“That’s mistletoe. When two people are standing under it at the same time, they have to kiss.”
“Are you only allowed to kiss under such kind of a stick?”
Doug had to laugh. “No, of course not. You misunderstood me, you can kiss wherever you want, but this is kind of fashion for Christmas, you know?”
Clavo nodded. “I see.” He looked above, and then kissed Doug on the cheek. “I love you, Doug!”
“I love you too, Peewee!”
He carried him to his bedroom and put him in his bed.
“And now it’s bedtime. Tomorrow, when you wake up again, it’s Christmas.”
It was the first Christmas Doug and Clavo spent together, but maybe it was harder for the boy because he had to experience it without his mother Amalia, who was still in
“Would you tell me a story?” Clavo asked and nestled a bit more into his pillows. Doug stroked his head. “Of course.”
Like always, it didn’t take long for the kid to fall asleep, even though he was very nervous the whole day. Since Doug had told him about Santa Claus, he wanted to meet him desperately, but after all, the tiredness seemed to be stronger than his wish.
Doug looked at him one last time before he left the room and closed the door as quietly as possible. When he looked at his watch he noticed that his best friend Tom Hanson would arrive soon and like it was a command, he heard a knock at the door.
Doug opened the door and immediately pressed a hand on Tom’s mouth when he happily wanted to greet him.
“Psst! Clavo just fell asleep.” he whispered.
Tom nodded and entered the corridor where he first got rid of his shoes and his jacket. He followed Doug to the kitchen where the other man poured coffee in two cups and handed one to him.
“Thank you for helping me. I just want it to be special for Clavo.”
Tom put a hand on his shoulder and looked directly into his eyes. “It will. As a matter of fact, I’ll help you. After all, I don’t want it to become a chaos, either.” A cheeky grin appeared on his lips.
After they finished drinking coffee, Doug arranged the Christmas tree, which he had hidden in the cellar, so that Clavo wouldn’t see it. Together they decorated it and about an hour later the whole room was resplendent in a Christmassy brightness. Satisfied, Tom sank onto the couch and, shortly after, Doug took his place beneath him. Again he handed him a cup of coffee, which Tom thankfully took.
“Without your help, I’m sure it would have taken me the whole night. Or at least, I wouldn’t have been this fast.” He smiled. “Now the only thing that’s missing is the presents, which have to be under the tree and everything’s gonna be perfect.
Tom also smiled. “Clavo will look so surprised. I can’t wait to see his face.”
Grinning, Doug observed him. “That’s kinda sweet, you’re even more nervous than he is.”
Tom gave him a small punch. “That’s not true.”
“Of course it is.”
The bigger of the two took a sip from his coffee cup and closed his eyes for a moment. A few weeks ago, he couldn’t have even imagined caring for a kid this soon, but now he just couldn’t imagine living without Clavo. He really set his heart on him, even if the circumstances under which he came to him weren’t really joyful. Tom had really supported him, and for that he was really grateful. He didn’t know if he could have made it without him.
“Is everything alright?”
Tom’s voice broke his trance and he turned to him again.
“Of course, I just didn’t pay attention, did you say something?”
Tom shook his head. “No… but you seemed… vacant,” he said quietly, and the expression in his eyes revealed that he was a bit concerned.
“I… just had to think about Martha… and about
He didn’t like to speak about his dead wife Martha, because even if a lot of time passed, it still hurt thinking about the fact that they only spent a few days together. He didn’t know if it could have worked between the two of them, but he didn’t have the opportunity to find out either.
Tom put an arm around him. “You are really strong, Doug. And Martha would be so proud of you. You give her nephew the opportunity to live a life she never had. You give him a better future than he would have had in
Doug leaned against him. “But without you… I wouldn’t be able to manage all this. You have no idea how much you support me.”
Tom looked away embarrassed. “Nonsense! You’re my best friend, and who would I be if I just let you down? We were always there for each other and we always will be, I promise. You can count on me.”
Doug pulled him into his arms and snuggled against him. “Thanks,” was the only word which left his lips, while he was just holding Tom for a while. Afterwards he turned apart and got up.
“I’ll get the presents from my room. And what do you think about watching movies afterwards?”
Tom nodded in agreement.
“Good idea. I have presents in my car, too. I’ll get them while you’re getting yours,” he added and stood up.
He put on his shoes and his jacket and left the flat, on his way to get the presents. Doug went to his bedroom and opened his closet. He took the packed boxes and placed them underneath the Christmas tree. There were three presents for Clavo, one from him, one from Judy, Fuller and Ioki and the third one from his mother Amalia. It had arrived last week with mail and Doug was very relieved that Clavo didn’t have noticed it earlier, because on the box was written that it was a Christmas present.
There was also a present for Tom, a new bowling ball, engraved with his name. Doug didn’t know if he would like it, but he didn’t find anything else.
When he heard the door opening, he turned and watched Tom entering the living room and placing two more presents underneath the tree.
“I’m so exited and I wanna see Clavo’s face when he opens all this. It’s been a long time since I spent Christmas with a kid,” he admitted.
Doug looked at him. “Yeah, me too… but I think that makes it something special.”
He disappeared in his bedroom for a few minutes, and then came back with a few videos. He let Tom choose and put the movie into the recorder soon afterwards. From the kitchen, he brought a few sandwiches which he had prepared and took two bottles of beer from the refrigerator, before he took place on the couch beside Tom. He turned on the movie and made himself comfortable.
The more time was passing, the more the day left its traces and so it was Tom, who fell asleep after a while. His head sank against Doug’s shoulder and he carefully put it on his lap to make him more comfortable. He wanted to carry Tom to his bedroom after the end of the film and sleep on the sofa, but he didn’t get to because he had fallen asleep himself after a while as well.
He didn’t awake before the next morning, and he only woke because someone was picking at him and shaking him. Dazily, he blinked, finally opened his eyes and met Clavo’s.
“Clavo. Aren’t you able to sleep?”
Again Clavo picked at him. “Dooooooug... It’s already morning. You have to get up, Santa Claus was there,” he said, sounding excited, and pointed to the Christmas tree and again tried to get his uncle up.
When Doug was about to sit up, he noticed the weight on his lap and remembered the past evening.
Tom was still half-asleep, but because he also noticed Clavo’s shaking rolled aside and rubbed his eyes before he opened them.
“What’s the matter?” he asked very confused, seemed to not know where he was in the first moment.
Doug sat up. “Santa Claus was here.” He repeated Clavo’s words. “And Clavo wants to unwrap his presents now.” He tousled through Clavo’s hair and pulled him onto his lap when Tom got up. “It seems we fell asleep during the movie,” he informed his best friend, who just nodded. “Yeah, seems so.”
His hair was a total mess as he tried to fully wake. He yawned heartily, then stretched. “May I use your bathroom?”
Doug nodded, smiling.
“Of course. You know where to find it. We’ll wait for you, right Clavo?”
The boy looked at Tom. “Sure.” He jumped on the floor and went to the Christmas tree. His eyes were shining and in this moment, Doug knew why all the effort was worth it. It didn’t take long till Tom came out of the bathroom and finally the three of them stood in front of the Christmas tree and enjoyed its glory.
Clavo kneeled at the floor and grabbed one of the presents.
“May I unwrap something now?” he asked excited, and Tom and Doug sat beneath him.
“Yes, of course.”
While the boy was busy unpacking his first present, Doug took the one for Tom and handed it to him.
“Careful, it’s very heavy,” he informed him when he was took it.
“For me?” Tom was speechless for a moment; he didn’t know why he deserved this.
“No, for your grandmother,” Doug grinned. “Of course it’s for you.”
Before he opened it, Tom flung his arms around his neck.
“Thank you, Doug.”
He stood up, put the box on the table and carefully, he loosened the tape because he didn’t want to damage anything. He opened the packet and discovered the dark-blue bowling ball, with his name engraved. Open-mouthed, he stared at Doug, and then carefully took the bowling ball.
“Doug… that’s… I don’t know what to say…”
Doug stood behind him and put a hand on his shoulder.
“Thank you would be enough.”
Tom put the ball back into the box, turned to him and took him into his arms, pressing himself against him.
“Thank you very, very much, Doug.”
Tom knew his best friend must have really thought about the present, because it was something so special and he really loved it. Suddenly, Doug felt Clavo pulling at his pullover.
“What’s the matter, darling?” he asked, but didn’t release Tom from his embrace. The boy pointed above and not until then Doug noticed that they were standing directly under the mistletoe he had placed there the day before.
“Are you gonna kiss now?” Clavo asked, observing them very curiously.
“What nonsense do you teach him?” Tom said insecurely, looking directly into the eyes of his best friend.
“That’s… no nonsense!”
Doug hesitated for a moment, but in the end he bent down to Tom’s height and pressed his lips on his so that he didn’t have a chance to do something about it.
He was prepared for being pushed away or getting a slap in the face, but he couldn’t feel reply nor resistance, but all of sudden he felt Tom’s hands on his arms, felt him nestle to his chest and answer the kiss.
Immediately, his heart beat faster and he felt a tickle in his stomach, like he hadn’t felt for a long time. He stroked Tom’s back, deepened the kiss by letting his tongue touch Tom’s lips, and he opened his mouth to allow him taking the next step. The kiss seemed to last forever, till Tom was the first one who carefully tore apart. He opened his eyes and looked at Doug.
“What… what was that?” he asked silently, nearly inaudibly, and seemed to be very confused.
Doug lovingly hugged him and his mouth was at Tom’s ear.
“I… I don’t know… but I think, we’ll find out…”
He blinked and finally let go off him, saw Clavo still observing them with a very bright smile on his lips.
“Do you love Tommy, Doug?” he asked very curiously and didn’t seem to be interested in his presents anymore.
Doug blushed and looked at him.
“Don’t you want to unwrap your other presents? Look, Santa Claus brought something from
He took Amalia’s package and handed it to the boy.
“There is also a letter… I’ll read it to you, okay?”
Together with Clavo he sank onto the couch and Tom took place beneath them shortly after. While Clavo was opening the package, Doug took the letter and started reading it for him. Over and over again he shared secret looks with Tom, and even if they both didn’t know yet what was happening between them, they both felt that something had changed. And the future would show what exactly it was.
